Wedding photography and nailing those 'group shots'

Getting photos of you with those 'VIP wedding guests'!

Group shots are usually on my 'list' when photographing weddings. Not only do the bride and groom typically request photos of them with their family and closest chums, but quite often parents and grandparents specifically ask for certain group photos.

For those of you planning your big day, I have just a few suggestions that may be of some use....!

  • Think carefully about how many group photos you would like. A good sense check is to ask yourself whether they are likely to make the wall or an album?

  • Is there a named person that can assist with the 'round-up' of people. The photographer will initiate the group photos, but it can be handy to have a 'go to' person to point out individuals in amongst all the wedding guests, when they are needed for a group photo.

  • Give some thought to when would be a good time to schedule these group shots....your photographer will no doubt have some suggestions here.

  • If you would like a group photo of the full wedding party, its handy for the photographer to have an elevated point stand-point (outdoor group photos, shot out of an upstairs window, are a great way to capture everyone clearly)

  • Group photos don't have to be formal! Couples often have more traditional photos with parents and siblings, with more relaxed and fun shots saved for the bridesmaid and groomsmen

I advance of all my wedding bookings, I schedule an informal catch-up with my couples, to run through the plans for their big day. This helps me to understand the schedule of the day, what exactly they want from their wedding images (including any group photos!) and allows me to identify and advise on any forward planning that may be required to bring their vision to life.
